Conservation status of the endemic species Astragalus lignipes (Fabaceae)

Abstract

The genus Astragalus L., comprising more than 3,000 species worldwide, is the largest genus of flowering plants, and Iran, with over 850 recorded species, represents one of its principal centers of diversity and endemism. Astragalus lignipes Akhavan & Maassoumi was originally described as an endemic species from the highlands of Fereydunshahr in Isfahan Province, Iran. In the present study, its geographical distribution was re-evaluated, and the occurrence of the species was confirmed on Hashtad Mountain in the Central Zagros, demonstrating that its distribution extends beyond the type locality. Field surveys combined with herbarium specimen data were assessed according to the criteria and guidelines of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The results showed that A. lignipes is characterized by small and fragmented populations, a highly restricted distribution range, and ecologically fragile habitats. Consequently, the species is assigned to the Critically Endangered (CR) category. The principal threats to its survival include overgrazing, mining activities, and ongoing habitat degradation. To ensure the long-term conservation of this rare endemic species, in situ conservation measures, including grazing management and the regulation of human activities within its habitat, are recommended in combination with ex situ conservation through seed collection and long-term storage in the Natural Resources Gene Bank. These integrated conservation strategies provide an essential framework for safeguarding the remaining populations and preserving the genetic resources of A. lignipes.
